Inspiration for this painting actually came from a tour I took last summer with my husband on the Munich Olympic Roof. As a true Munich native, born six years before the Munich Summer Olympics, I’ve been a fan of the Olympic Park since it first opened.
I have countless memories of visiting exhibitions, attending concerts, and enjoying athletic activities in the park, all of which still connect me to this iconic Munich landmark. Naturally, I also visited the Olympic Tower, which rises high above the city – a must-see experience.
The ultimate experience, however, was walking on the brilliantly engineered tent roof. It’s truly a highly recommended tour, offering many fascinating details. Among them is the fact that the tent roof was once thought to be impossible to build – at least according to the early computer simulations. Now, however, digital technology has advanced to the point where it can confirm the roof’s practicality – over 50 years after it was built.
The tour ends with the “flying fox” – harnessed in climbing gear, you zip from the edge of the roof across the stadium to the other side. It’s an exhilarating ride that ends far too quickly.
What remains in my memory is the magnificent view of the city from up there and the sense of freedom in the air – the “thrilling view.”
