Depicting individuals in their daily lives is both fulfilling and a fascinating challenge. While painting a likeness is the simpler aspect, the true challenge—and a significant responsibility—lies in capturing and conveying the stories behind what I observe. My paintings serve as my diary, documenting a moment in someone’s life. They represent not only the physical appearance of an individual but also my personal perspective and interpretation of what I see.
I observed a young adult who seemed to be oblivious to her surroundings. Instead, she appeared completely absorbed in her phone, not noticing the beauty of her environment.
This scene invites contemplation on how modern technology affects our perception and interpersonal communication. It raises the question of whether we can genuinely appreciate the significant moments around us in a world filled with distractions.
Flirting from a distance
After the coronavirus pandemic, I witnessed an amusing scene. The two young ladies behind this young man were making a strong effort to get his attention. Despite their desperate attempts, he was completely unaware of their existence. I had to be very careful not to laugh out loud while I sketched and took notes on this amusing scene.
