Stefan Nützel
Inspired by the refined paintings of Balthus, Stefan Nützel studied under him in Paris. Balthus then sent S. Nützel to Italy, where he was introduced to the chiaroscuro technique of Caravaggio. This was followed by a stay in Madrid, where Velázquez taught him the art of loose brushwork. Another chapter of his training was six years spent with Johannes Grützke in Nuremberg. It was with Grützke that Nützel learned about integrity, courage, and how humor can enhance a painting. The final phase of his artistic journey involved extensive painting trips with Sargent. This plein air painting experience brought light into Nützel’s work.
