Dear companions and friends of the Münchener Künstlergenossenschaft,

Being responsible for such a great community of artists is an honor and a challenge. Being the first woman in the history of the MKG to hold this position sounds spectacular at first. Time will tell whether it is, and as with each of my predecessors over the past 155 years, it is the result that counts in the end.

In this century and a half of history, the roof of the MKG has changed; today it is primarily a symbolic one. Uniting first-class artists under this roof, living and presenting art together, is our goal today as it was then. Our most important task is to stabilize this roof and make it fit for the future without losing sight of our history.

This year the MKG’s annual exhibition is being held for the third time under the roof of Lenbach, the Münchner Künstlerhaus. It was built to be a meeting place for artists, art lovers and the element that unites us all – art. Art has always had the task of showing both the beautiful and the critical, and encouraging viewers to reflect.

The resulting dialog between artists, artworks and viewers can have many effects – it can reveal new perspectives, for example encouraging people to try something new and, of course, arousing interest in the person behind the work. It is fascinating to immerse yourself in the creative minds of the artists and opens up completely new perspectives on the paintings and sculptures on display, which is not always obvious without the presence of the creators. To give our visitors these insights, we have continued last year’s experiment and once again attached QR codes to the artworks. Hidden behind each code are stories, photos or videos about the creation, inspiration and technique of the artworks as well as the artists’ self-image. An exciting journey that will deepen your encounter with art.

We look forward to accompanying you on this journey and welcome you to our annual exhibition in 2024.
Yours sincerely
Gudrun Kohout
